I love the world of cakes. I have been creating custom cakes for close friends and family for a few years now, but I have barely scratched the surface of the many decorating techniques and possibilities. That’s why I love it.
Also, seeing people’s reactions upon receiving their cakes. Can’t forget that part!
Anyway, there’s log cakes, brick cakes, tree stump cakes, cakes decorated to look like cakes? – I will produce one of those bad boys in the future. So, why not concrete cakes?
I believe the cake world will start seeing more cakes that resemble the cold look of concrete, with different shades of cool grey. A growing trend, if you will. I just LOVE this look.
There’s so many ways to get this outcome, but I’m going to show you how I did it!
I also use this technique to get the look for a watercolor cake.
Start with a crumb coat on your cake, chill.
Then, start with your base color, a cold light grey. Frost the whole cake with this base color. Save a tiny scoop of white buttercream.
Take two individual scoops of the grey. Make a darker grey, and an even DARKER grey.
Randomly apply small dabs of the three remaining colors: white, dark grey, darker grey. Then smooth out and watch the colors blend!
Proceed to smooth and scrape until you’re happy with the outcome!
Here’s my end result for this concrete cake.
I had the privilege of making this cake for my sister-someday-inlaw, who is a firefighter! What an honor, huh?!

What kind of buttercream did you use?
Looks fantastic!

Wow I have been searching for tips on making a concrete cake for so long! Great job!
When I try make grey buttercream (I use Swiss meringue) theres a slight purple tone to it though. I use the americolour gel, do you mind me asking what dye you use?

Hey there Georgia, my apologies for the delay! I’ve had that issue as well, I use Wilton gel food coloring, and also add some McCormicks black food coloring to help with the purple! I hope this is not too late to be helpful!! 🙂
